KISERGEI COMMUNITY
LOCATION
Kisergei is approximately 4 hours north of Nairobi and about one hour north of the equator near nanyuki town. This area is sometimes referred to as the Segera region due to the Segera ranch nearby.
COMMUNITY OVERVIEW
Several large ranches and game preserves in the area used to provide job opportunities for people from various local tribes that reside in the area. Some ranches remain, but the local Kenyans have settled in a number of communities in the area and are now farmers and pastoralists (nomads who raise livestock on natural pastures).
The kisergei community and the surrounding area are home to maasai tribe.
The area is very secluded and, in numerous ways, cut off from the outside world. As a result, many of the tribal people here have not yet been reached with the Gospel and illiteracy level is high as many older generations have not gone to school
Teams serving in this area have an incredible opportunity to share the Gospel to the unreached.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES
Community development Priorities
The first priority that the community leadership identified and wanted to address was the water crisis that plagued the community. A project to bring safe water to the community has been completed by the local government and it has been a huge blessing to the people of kisergei. the community haven’t had any support or partnership from any non profit and this provides an opportunity to walk alongside this community to enhance community development.
The current community development priorities are:
- Construction of a church facility to help the community to have a place of worship
- Child sponsorship which is $ 20 per month helps the kid to stay in school and get education, the school has 126 to 140 due to nomadic lifestyle of the community
- Construction of an extra classroom to decongest the classroom, currently the each classroom has about 70 kids, the cost is $ 6000
- Water provision to the school by sinking a borehole
